Margaret Howard Watson
Founder: The Global Sustainable Schools Council
Ms. Watson is the Founding Chairman and President of Global Environmental Options (GEO), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which was created in 1994 as the result of Margaret’s participation in the 1993 Greening of the White House Initiative -- the first major gathering of the green building community around one project. The White House Initiative selected 100 experts, including engineers, architects, scientists and planners from around the United States, to develop design and operations solutions for the White House and the Old Executive Office Building (OEOB). GEO was established to continue to develop replicable models of sustainable design on the Building and Community scale that integrate design and maximize resource and cost savings. GEO projects have since included The Greening of The National Parks, the first internet-based Green Building Database, the NYC Green [Independent] Schools Alliance & Low-Carbon Schools Initiative, and the Global Green Schools Alliance. Margaret has participated in projects including Habitat For Humanity, The Pentagon and The Presidio. She has a BA from Smith College, a MArch from Columbia University and completed an internship at The Institute For Architecture and Urban Studies in NYC. Ms. Watson is an architect, environmentalist, writer and mother. She is married to Rob Watson, the “Father of LEED,” and has an 8 year-old inspiration named Max.
