Michael B. Hoffman
Partner: Riverstone Holdings LLC
Mr. Hoffman is a Partner and Senior Managing Director of Riverstone and head of Riverstone’s Renewable Energy Infrastructure Fund. Mr. Hoffman serves on the Investment Committee of Riverstone’s Renewable Fund and Riverstone’s Energy and Power Funds. He is based in New York.
Prior to joining Riverstone in 2003, Mr. Hoffman was Senior Managing Director and head of the M&A Advisory business of The Blackstone Group for 15 years, where he also served on the firm’s Principal Group Investment Committee as well as its executive committee. During his tenure at The Blackstone Group, Mr. Hoffman led some of the largest utility mergers in North America, including the $10 billion merger of Northern States Power with New Century Energy, resulting in the first coast-to-coast U.S. utility company. He also advised Louisville Gas & Electric in the $5 billion acquisition of LG&E by Powergen of the United Kingdom. In 2001, Mr. Hoffman was asked to assist the Governor of the State of California in his efforts to manage the short-term financial shocks to the state and structure the state’s $12 billion energy cost financing. In 1982, Mr. Hoffman was named Managing Director and co-head of the Mergers & Acquisitions Department at Smith Barney, Harris Upham & Co. Mr. Hoffman serves on the Boards of Directors of Buckeye, Kramer Junction, Green Earth Fuels, Bottle Rock, Collingwood Ethanol, Coastal Carolina Clean Power, and Topaz Power Group. Mr. Hoffman also serves as Chairman of the Board for Onconova Therapeutics. In addition, he serves on several not-for-profit boards including that of Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital and The Nature Conservancy. Mr. Hoffman also served as a Management Associate in the Executive Office of the President during the Ford Administration. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Northwestern University and his M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School.
