Jane Steiner Hoffman
Founder & President: Presidential Forum on Renewable Energy

Jane S. Hoffman is the chair of The Presidential Forum on Renewable Energy, an organization she founded in January of 2007 to bring increased attention to issues of renewable energy, sustainability, and conservation. The candidate forum will take place in the fall of 2007 and will be the first of its kind.  Hoffman’s book on renewable energy, Green Tag: How Renewable Energy is Changing America, is slated to be published by Palgrave Macmillan, a division of Hotzbrinck in April 2008.

Previously, Hoffman served a New York State Commissioner for Public Authority Reform.  The Commission had oversight responsibility for the performance and governance of more than 700 Public Authorities statewide.  The Commission’s vision for reform led to a groundbreaking new policy framework, which was hailed as a model for the nation.

In 2000, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani appointed Hoffman Commissioner of the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs, after serving as Deputy Commissioner.  With a policy focus that included environmentally friendly initiatives, health and safety, air quality, and government efficiency, Hoffman led the expansion of the Consumer Affairs youth anti-tobacco initiative, a program that resulted in New York City becoming the first municipality in the nation to have inspected every retail outlet for the illegal sale of tobacco to minors.  She created the first ever Home Heating Oil Task Force to seek ways to lighten the financial burden that high gasoline prices place on consumers and businesses.  Ms. Hoffman also was instrumental in advancing measures that would protect New York City’s air by forcing bus engines to comply with national emissions standards.

As a results-driven advocate, in 2002 Hoffman was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor of New York.  However, due to illness, she withdrew from the race.
